GIL (Path)  2016-2021

GIL translates to “path” in my native Korean. In my stone sculpture, the path is not a route laid on the surface but a passage revealed through carving—negative space made tangible. The void becomes metaphysical—a resonant cavity where memory and silence coexist. In diasporic terms, this carved absence serves as dislocation: identity shaped not only by what is present, but by what has been lost, erased, or left behind. Here, absence behaves like presence. That is, removing superfluity, only necessity remains. 
In this series, I work with a Möbius-strip form, a continuous loop that twists and returns. Within this tangled, infinite structure, chaos and order coexist. In stone, this infinity is not merely abstract. Each cut records time as pressure, resistance, and release, and each turn becomes a threshold where what seems to end becomes a beginning. What remains is a body of weight and silence shaped into a path, asking the viewer to follow its continuity and dwell within its unresolved, enduring return.
