Korean-born Kyong Boon Oh received her BFA from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago and her BS in Mathematics from Korea University.  She was a painter before and now has expanded her mediums to sculpting. Her studios are located In Orange County, CA.
Transcendent end is hidden in our own depths, waiting for the chance to occupy a conscious moment. I try to discover the moment and reveal it through my art practice which is both figurative and abstract.
My practice has two objectives, one focus on identity, the other defocus from it. The tension from the two makes me walk a line between emotion and meditation.
The ambiguity of emotion where I carefully observe my slightest unconscious gestures is the starting point of the creative process. And I borrow Cindy Sherman’s theatricality of posing for her ‘altered identities.’
As a Korean-born living abroad with a language barrier, I desire to project a possible identity by adopting from both historical and imaginative imagery with a nomadic perspective.
But at the same time I find myself to defocus from my subject, exploring abstract forms with both subtractive and additive process of 3D mediums and allowing the physicality of the materials to lead myself. The mindset of labor-intensive hand weaving repetition of wire or removing superfluity inside stones enables me to flow with medium and conform to the process.
The meditating quality of the process creates a breathable space Inwardly. That interiority alludes to transcendence of the self.”
